ABOUT URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS (UTI) IN DOGS

UTIs are fairly common in dogs. Dogs with UTIs generally attempt to urinate very frequently whenever they go outside. They may strain to urinate or whine when urinating if it is painful. You might even notice some blood in their urine. Dripping urine or an unusually stronger odor than normal, can also be a sign that your dog has an infection. A sudden change in their toileting habits may also indicate that your pet may not be feeling not well.

HOW IT OCCURS

UTI occurs when bacteria travels up the urethra and into the bladder. The most common organism to cause UTIs in dogs is Escherichia coli (the bacteria found in feces).  Once bacteria find their way there, they can grow and reproduce, resulting in a UTI. Some pets may develop bladder stones in conjunction with their UTI, which could result in additional health issues.

PERSISTENT AND RECURRING UTI

  • It is more common, in the general population, in female dogs

  • Dogs with diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes).

  • Dogs who have bladder stones are also more prone to recurring infections. (Bladder stones must be removed or dissolved in order to restore bladder health.)

TESTING

A urinalysis at your veterinarian clinic can reveal important information about the urine when a UTI is suspected. It shows:

  • Urine-specific gravity (how well the dog is concentrating their urine)

  • pH (certain pH levels can indicate infection or other problems)

  • Ketones (sometimes seen in cases of diabetes or body-wasting)

  • Glucose (sugar in the urine, usually a sign of diabetes)

  • Bilirubin (a breakdown product of blood)

  • Blood

  • Protein

For example if there are sediments in the urine, your veterinarian may suggest an X-ray or ultrasound in order to determine if there are bladder stones.

PREVENTION

  • A diet change may be recommended

  • Medication or supplements that can help to change the pH of the urine, making it harder for an infection to take hold

  • Cleaning and regular washing

HOW DOES ROCKS URINARY+ HELP TO KEEP UTI AWAY

  • ROCKS Urinary+ is a specially formulated probiotic that inhibits growth of Urethral Pathogenic Escherichia Coli (UPEC) that causes Urinary Tract Infections (UTI).

  • Its patented encapsulation method to ensure the capsule survives bile salt and acids to reach the gut and work effectively

  • It remains effective by preventing UPEC growth

  • Supresses UPEC-induced cell damage

  • Helps maintain healthy bladder acidity level
